To borrow a phrase from the Godfather of Soul, Nancy Houssels is arguably the hardest working patron of the arts in Las Vegas.
By 10 a.m. every day, she’s usually starting an hours-long meeting about one of three things: the new performing arts center, the UNLV Foundation or the Nevada Ballet Theatre.
“I do a good 9 to 5. If it’s not one project it’s the other,” Houssels says.
Naturally, she cherishes her downtime and looks forward to her annual trips to San Diego, where she and her husband have an ocean-front house.
San Diego, she says, is “ just a total change of pace. It’s very peaceful and calm, very relaxing.”
They always go to San Diego between July and September, when the Del Mar racetrack season is under way. Houssels and husband spend about 44 racing days there, visiting friends, watching races or, in her case, sitting in her office, looking out of the window at the ocean.
