M&M Soul Food is pretty much the grand dame of this category in Las Vegas. It has earned its stripes and for good reason, because this is what puts the soul in soul food — the smothereds and the frieds, but also dishes such as liver and onions and chitterlings. Fellow veteran Kathy’s Southern Cooking is a distant second.

Ella Em’s is an upstart in a developing part of the valley that has picked up its own fans — including us — for such dishes as crisp-crusted fried chicken and mellow as they come black-eyed peas. And we also like the atmosphere, with its stainless-steel furniture and burgundy walls, which are a great change of pace.

My wife and I went to Ella Em’s. It was not awesome at all. My wife ordered catfish. It wasn’t even crunchy. It was mushy. I ordered meatloaf. It was not evened seasoned well. It just tasted like plain old ground beef. The corn bread was probably the best thing. It was light and buttery. However, I didn’t pay $12 for cornbread. The sweet tea was not sweet tea. If you would like to know what Southern sweet tea tastes like (while in Las Vegas), go to Raising Cane’s. I know. Weird. For better red beans & rice, go to Popeye’s. I know…still weird.

Never ate at this place but I was told by mt Parents and some friends that this place is not all that great. I personally LOVE Kathy’s but over the 10 years I been eating there, it has gotten so high that I’d rather just bribe my mom into cooking some of her good ol fashioned Georgia Southern coookin! Beats any of these places but who wants to be in a hot kitchen in 180 degree weather in VEGAS!!
