2010 - Best Community Organization

Readers' Pick:

Three Square Food Bank

VN:F [1.9.11_1134]
Rating: +74 (from 104 votes)

This may be one of the biggest upsets in Best of Las Vegas history. After a dozen years at the top, Opportunity Village , which bills itself as Las Vegas’ favorite charity, slips to second place. The new, reigning champ, Three Square, partners with gaming and other businesses, nonprofits and other agencies (not to mention hundreds of volunteers) to collect and distribute donated and ‘rescued’ , food to those in need. These days, the need is greater than ever, and Three Square has stepped up to fill it in winning fashion.

Our Pick:

Habitat For Humanity

VN:F [1.9.11_1134]
Rating: +30 (from 44 votes)

Home is where the heart is , and heart, along with hard work, has enabled Habitat for Humanity to help working families help themselves. The group and its volunteers build single-family homes for families earning less than 80 percent of median income and sell them, at no profit, through no-interest mortgages. Future homeowners also invest ‘sweat equity’ by helping to construct their new abodes. More than 70 local families are now enjoying the fruits of their labors. There truly is no place like home and, thanks to Habitat for Humanity, more Southern Nevadans have one.
