It’s official: Adele Las Vegas residency announced

Adele has found her room on the Strip.

The Colosseum at Caesars Palace has prevailed in the sweepstakes to present the international recording star, with “Weekends With Adele” kicking off in January and running through mid-April.

Adele announced the deal on social media with the post “See you at Caesars in Vegasss” Tuesday morning. She is scheduled to perform two shows each weekend from Jan. 21 through April 16.

The Adele announcement — which came on Tuesday — arrives just after the release of her latest album, “30,” on Nov. 19. The new release is her first full album since “25” in 2015.

Adele has applied her sense of humor and attention to Las Vegas iconography in her first residence foray in to Vegas. The second photo in her two-shot carousel on Instagram announcing the residency was her head positioned a classic shot of Liberace at Radio City Music Hall. We have the mirrored Baldwin and matching suit, with the superstar beaming as if receiving a standing O.

The wait is on

Presale tickets for these shows will be available through registration, using Ticketmaster Verified Fan. Registration opened at 6 a.m. Tuesday, and continues until 11:59 p.m. Thursday (all times Pacific). For more information and to register, visit https://verifiedfan.ticketmaster.com/adele. No prices have been listed.

The Verified Fan Presale will begin 10 a.m. Dec. 7. As the news release announcing the residency spells out, only fans who have received a unique code will have the chance to purchase tickets for performances on a first-come, first-served basis. Ticketmaster Verified Fan does not guarantee that every fan will get a ticket. But it does make ticket buying fair by ensuring only other fans are competing for tickets.

If demand for tickets from Verified Fans exceeds supply, there will not be a public sale. As the message on the Ticketmaster site reminds, “We expect the demand for tickets to see Adele to be overwhelming.”

Ticket buyers are prompted to log into their Ticketmaster account (or create one if not already registered) and select four performance dates. Fans will then be notified Monday if they are eligible to purchase up to four tickets for their requested dates.

An expert on ticketing policy, Smith Center President Myron Martin, said the policy of securing ticket positions for individual fans is becoming commonplace. He pointed to Harry Styles’ world tour as one significant series using the Verified Fans approach. Madonna also employed the protocol in her 2019 tour.

Both stars played Vegas, Styles headlining MGM Grand Garden Arena and Madonna the Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

Martin said the registration system does give “real fans” a chance to actually reserve a ticket spot as a show is announced. This eliminates the harvesting of tickets by brokers, who can collect and sell them on the secondary market.

“It’s a way for Ticketmaster to have you register on the Ticketmaster website as a real consumer, before the ‘bots’ can get in and try to buy them all,” Martin said, referring to the automated system used to snap up tickets as they are put on sale. “I don’t think it is that big a deal that the Adele shows are using that verified system. I think we’ll see more and more of it with the big headliners.”

‘An absolute master stroke’

The Adele series conveniently matches the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority’s “Live in Vegas” summer digital marketing campaign. That was followed by the “Greatest Arena on Earth” blitz unfurled in late August.

The message expanded the city’s long-standing “Entertainment Capital of the World” moniker to include sports. The return of headline entertainment is keeping pace with the popularity of the Raiders, Golden Knights, championship combat-sports events, and even the Concacaf soccer final and the WWE’s SummerSlam at Allegiant Stadium.

“I think we’ve led the world in entertainment for a long time now,” said R&R Partners CEO Billy Vassiliadis, whose agency produced the “Greatest Arena” commercials. “Now you’ve got Adele, an absolute masterstroke, an international draw who is great for Caesars and great for the city. She’s a great accelerator of the narrative of Vegas coming back, bigger, badder, stronger.

“It’s spectacular news.”

Clark County Commission Chairman Marilyn Kirkpatrick was equally effusive.

“As one of the most accomplished singers across the globe, her residency shines a bright light on Las Vegas as the true Entertainment Capital of the World,” she said. “There is no doubt that her show will be one of the hottest-selling tickets in town for visitors and local residents alike.”

Across the Strip, now Adele shares Strip residency status with such luminaries as Carrie Underwood (opening this week) at Theatre at Resorts World Las Vegas, to be followed by Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and (we anticipate) Celine DionShania Twain and the Scorpions at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood; Carlos Santana at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay; and Bruno Mars (and we expect, Lady Gaga in her return) at Dolby Live at Park MGM.

In her new home Vegas venue, Adele joins Usher, Van Morrison (three dates in February), Rod Stewart and Sting on the Colosseum schedule.

Room at this inn

The Colosseum’s available dates were reportedly a primary reason Adele opted for Caesars. She commented on Vegas residency rumors to Rolling Stone magazine last month, saying nothing had been signed “because there’s (expletive) nothing available.”

That concern has clearly been remedied.

The Colosseum booking ends a lengthy period of speculation about Adele’s headlining prospects in Las Vegas. Over the summer she was rumored and reported to be headed for the Theater at Resorts World Las Vegas. She was also known to be in talks for a run at Dolby Live at Park MGM.

Four years ago, she was rumored to be moving toward a residency at Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. Even further back, in 2015, press accounts from around the world reported that Caesars Entertainment, Las Vegas Sands Corp. and MGM Resorts International were seeking an Adele residency.

Last month, the superstar denied reports from the U.K. that she’d been actively seeking the advice of former Colosseum headliner Dion as “absolutely not true.” Dion, of course, established the model for the modern-era Vegas superstar residency. In her two residency productions over a 16-year run, covering 2003-2007, and 2011-2019, Dion performed 1,141 shows for 4.5 million fans, grossing more than $681 million, before bowing out in June 2019.

Adele is known to be an avid Dion fan. In October, she showed off a framed exhibit of Dion’s chewed gum. The odd art piece was a gift from James Corden, who asked Dion to spit her gum out as the two recorded “Carpool Karaoke” in Vegas in 2019. It’s yet another humorous nod to Vegas royalty, from a pop superstar ready to make her mark on the Strip.
